Activists protest women targeting revenge killings

Women associations in the Lakes State capital Rumbek have staged a protest against the killing of five women in a revenge attack in Cueibet County over the weekend.
The leader of the group Jozela Nyanagar Juma said she was shocked when she received the news about the incident. ”I am very disappointed that women are in hiding in Cueibet because of fear of being killed,” Jozela lamented. She said women should never be targeted in the revenge killings because of their vulnerability and non-involvement in cattle raiding.
Angelina Adhel Malual, Program Assistant Officer of DARD, a local NGO in Lakes State, urged armed men to stop involving women in the inter-communal fights because women do not raid cattle.
Several attacks have occurred since the governor declared peaceful disarmament in August.
Women in Rumbek gathered at Akon Buoi Cultural Hall compound last Friday to stage a peaceful protest agaist the killing of their fellow women in Cueibet County.
Lakes State has been experiencing endless waves of communal violence, mainly caused by revenge attacks and cattle raiding.
